Supported Housing

For over two decades, the concept of supportive housing has emerged nationally as a best practice for the housing for persons with disabilities and the homeless. While a variety of programs and models can be described as supportive housing, consensus has developed that permanent supportive housing is the best model for persons with disabilities and those persons who are homeless and vulnerable.

Access to decent, safe, and affordable community housing that is linked to a variety of supports and services can help people successfully maintain tenancy, lead to an enhanced quality of life, independence and sustained wellness and recovery. Housing assistance programs in New Mexico are typically directed by community support workers who are also providing support services to people with long term behavioral, physical, and cognitive disabilities as well homeless persons and families

The commonly accepted principles of permanent supportive housing are:

  • Support services are offered to promote independent living and are client driven, individually tailored and flexible
  • Neither support service compliance nor following treatment plans are conditions of accessing housing or maintaining tenancy
  • Supported housing consumers have all the rights & responsibilities of tenancy
  • Housing is not subject to time limitations only lease requirements
  • Leases are renewable if compliance with standard lease terms and property rules are maintained
  • Regular and ongoing communication should occur between service providers, tenants and property managers

Presbyterian Medical Services manages permanent supported housing programs in Farmington, Gallup, Deming, and Socorro.
